9. My name is Julia Urbanski.  I teach math in southern California, USA.  My students have spent some time researching the $1 bill in USD, on The Dollar Bill Collector.  Here are some interesting facts that they found:
History:
* The first US $1 bill was issued in 1862.  Before that, only gold and coins were exchanged for goods and services. (from Diego and Shawn)
* In 1863, the United States established a national banking system with uniform national currency. (from Jose and Ezequiel)
* The notable element of the US dollar bill is the portrait of our first president, George Washington. (from Brandon, Karlo, and David)
* The original US dollar bill was nicknamed "greenback" because it is printed with green ink.  This term is still used today to refer to United States currency. (from Marcial and Justin)
Meanings of the symbols on the back side which shows the Great Seal of the United States:
* On the right is the American bald eagle (our country's national emblem and mascot).  It contains the motto: "E Pluribus Unum" which means "Out of Many, One".
* On the left, you will see a pyramid which stands for permanence and strength.  Above is the motto "Annuit Coeptis" which means "He has favored our undertakings" referring to our belief in God.  Below is the motto "Novus Ordo Seciorum" which means "A new order of the ages", representing the new country and experiment in liberty which is America.  At the bottom of the pyramid, you will see 1776 in Roman numerals, which represents the year our founders signed the Declaration of Independance, declaring that we were an independent nation.
